10 Gigabit Ethernet theoretically provides up to 1.25GB/s of throughput — roughly 10 times standard Gigabit — though real-world sustained speeds depend heavily on your actual storage hardware’s ability to read and write data that fast, not just the network link itself. A single spinning hard drive, for instance, can’t come close to saturating a 10GbE connection regardless of the network hardware involved.

When 10GbE Genuinely Makes a Difference

  • NAS-to-server transfers with SSD-backed storage – moving large VM images or backups between a fast NAS and your Proxmox host benefits directly from the increased bandwidth, provided both ends have storage fast enough to actually use it
